A Cold Summer Day
I just wanted to give a bit of an update since my last post was a week ago, which is pretty unusual for me. I came down with a cold (again), which has pretty much left me with little brain power and causes me to sleep a good portion of the day. It’s nice to catch up on the sleep, I must admit, but I’m pretty much useless to the world. But instead of just complaining about my cold in this post, I decided to write up some cold remedies that I’ve been trying out to get better faster.
Sleep:
As I said previously, my cold pretty much makes me sleep. Your body needs to rest in order to fight off your cold or whatever it is you may have. You should get as much rest as you possibly can so your body can use whatever little energy that you do have to fight off the cold you said numerous times you don’t have time for. I tried to will the cold off, but that didn’t work, so sleeping is the best next step in my opinion.
Cold Medicine:
For the record, I hate cold medicine in pretty much any form. The liquid tastes bad (unless you’re my husband who says I’m crazy and that it tastes fine) and the pills aren’t much better. You know what I’m talking about with the pills, you’re not supposed to taste them, you’re just supposed to swallow them, but you accidently put your tongue right on it and…yeah, it’s gross. Either way, I’ve been taking pills for the past couple of days, but I think I’m going to take the plunge and have liquid today, which I’m not looking forward to. Rumor has it, though, that the liquid actually works better. I’m going to have to test that out and if I’m better tomorrow, my husband will get to laugh at me because he’s been telling me to take the liquid stuff since I got sick in the first place.
Spicy Food:
If you’re feeling really congested and as if you cannot breathe through your nose, have some spicy food. I swear it will clear the congestion right up, at least for some period of time. Just make sure that you don’t eat something so spicy that you end up burning your mouth because then you’ll have another problem on your hands. Make sure it’s just spicy enough to clear up your stuffy nose. This is not suggested for those with a low tolerance of spicy food.
Cold Food:
Sore throat got you down? Get some ice cream. No, I’m not kidding, it soothes those aching tonsils and gives you a break from the pain. Plus, it tastes really good too. If you’re not into ice cream, you can always try something else cold like cold water or juice, ice or what have you. I like to keep something cold nearby though to sooth my tonsils and plus if you’re drinking cold orange juice you’ll get the vitamins in you need to help fight off the cold.
Orange Juice:
Orange juice is pretty much essential when you’re dealing with a cold. Like I said above it can help sooth your aching tonsils, but it also gives you vitamins that your body needs to fight off the cold. I’ve literally been drinking pretty much nothing but orange juice since I got this cold. It really does seem to be helping quite a bit. And no, orange soda is not a substitute as it doesn’t have the needed vitamins.
Soup:
I tell you, I’ve been nothing less than obsessed with soup since getting this cold. Chicken noodle has been my soup of choice, of course, and it helps to not only sooth my throat, but also to clear up congestion. This would be a good alternative to those who don’t enjoy spicy foods to clear up those nasal passages. Soup is also healthy for you, for the most part at least and there are so many different kinds out there that you can have. I would certainly recommend some good, hot soup to help clear up your cold.
Welp, there you have it. These are the methods I’ve been using to get rid of my cold and for the most part I think they’ve been helpful. I’m not one hundred percent back to myself, but I’m certainly getting there and it’s only been a couple of days. So wish me luck on knocking out this cold.

Interesting account. You mention about getting rid of congestion, hot and spicy food does the trick. Also sniffing some vicks vaporub is another good idea. If you like tea, try some of those. You can rub an egg on your sole. Lots of vitamin C can help. Chicken soup or noodle as you mention is a good one.

I forgot all about vicks vaporub. I have tendency to avoid it though because I don’t like the smell, which is really a bad excuse, haha. It does work though, thanks for reminding me about that. Tea is also great for battling a cold. I’ve never heard about rubbing egg on your sole before. I’ll have to see if that works one of these days. Thanks for adding some tips, Shalu!

Well, this isn’t the first time it’s happened during the summer. I was sick just last month as well, which what makes this even worse. I’m getting better slowly but surely.
I find that whenever I’m sick I tend to surround myself with HOTNESS because I feel that cold things will make me worse. I know I’m wrong, but I’m a fail like that.
I’ll still go to work and soldier it on, but ultimately, that thing that always makes me feel better is to stay at home for three days – no outdoor contact – and rest it up.
If only we could do that. >.>
Yep, thats a good idea or tip for someone whos feelin blue or ill or under the weather, especially when I got a woman’s “ya know what”… XDDD

I’m just like you, Mel, doesn’t matter how sick I am I’ll make myself go into work or school. I once went to school with a 102 fever..I didn’t last the entire day, lol. I agree with you though, staying home and resting up is a great way to fight off being sick. Too bad many of us don’t have time to do that.
