Is Blood Thicker?
The movie Dark Shadows starring Johnny Depp was recently released in theaters. Considering I’m obsessed with movies and have always been a huge fan of Johnny Depp, I, of course, had to go see it. I thought it was a great movie with a lot of laughs that I would recommend others to go see. There was a very interesting concept used within the movie, which is what I wanted to concentrate on for this post and that’s the concept that blood is thicker than water.
Barnabas Collins was raised much like I was in being taught that family is worth more than any material objects in the world. Money and other material objects are nice, but family is more precious than all of that and you should always be there for them as they should always be there for you. Unfortunately, that’s not always the case at hand. Families do split apart from time to time for one reason or another, but in the end, they are still family.
I found it interesting that in the movie Barnabas was locked away for nearly two hundred years and despite it all he was still so dedicated to his family, or what was left of them. Without even knowing his family members of the modern time, he didn’t let that stop him from protecting them and trying to help them with the struggles they were going through. He did whatever it was that he could to give the Collins family a good name, even if that meant using the ancient family jewels and treasures that were hidden away so that the house and company could be rebuilt. It just goes to show how important family really is to some people.
I felt that Dark Shadows was a really good movie that had a great message: family is important and should be cherished. It’s a movie I would certainly recommend others to see not only because I believe it has such a powerful message, but also because it has a great cast that worked well together to create a great comedy. So make sure to go check it out!

I somewhat agree with this. I enjoyed the movie overall, specifically Depp and Green. The screenplay, however, sucked. The story between Depp’s character and the Victoria character seemed to be on-again and off-again. Victoria led us to the house, then conveniently just stopped progressing her story until much later in the film.
Green’s character was pleasant and Depp provided some excellent comedic relief at just the right times. The rest of the characters didn’t really develop beyond their introductions. This isn’t the fault of the actors, more the fault of the screenplay.
Perhaps the biggest gaffe was the daughter’s reveal at the very end of the movie that she was a werewolf, with absolutely no foreshadowing or relevance.
3.5/5 at best. Anyway, nice review.
Thank you for your comment, Justin!
I agree with you that a lot of the characters were really undeveloped and my hope is that if they make a second film that they’ll move forward with developing them. I’m almost wondering if they assumed that most people seeing the movie also saw the television show, which may have explained more. I’m not sure since I didn’t actually see the series.
Yes! I was so thrown off by that part about the daughter at the end. I was like, “What? When did that happen? What are they talking about?” It was completely from left field. But overall, I still thought it was a good movie.
Thank you again for your comment and opinion.
I’d say it depends on the situation… I mean, some dysfunctionnal families won’t get behind each other at all times and etc… and they’d even punch in each others’ face, if you get my drift. And would stab at each others’ back and turn their backs on each other and etc… I’ve watched a family drama and the family didn’t take into account this notion or proverb at all. So, I don’t think this applies to any family.
I have to agree with you that there are families and situations in which this doesn’t apply; however, I have to disagree that it doesn’t apply to any family as you said. I’ve known many families that believe in and abide by this concept that blood is thicker than water, my own included. We would (and have) drop everything that we were doing for one another. Like I said, this just doesn’t happen with my own family, I’ve been around many other families that are the same way. So again, I wouldn’t go as far as saying that it doesn’t apply to any family because I’ve seen it within families, but everyone has their own opinions and experiences. ^^
But my family’s a very warm and functional one. So they apply this to the letter and by the book too. They won’t allow anyone to get hurt and etc, and I appreciate this a lot coming from my mom… but don’t get on with my Dad too much.
