What are the best ways to go about losing weight?
Fat and tired of it.
Thank you for writing in. In many situations I’ve come to realize that people see themselves as being “fat” when, in reality, they’re fine just the way they are. It is okay for you to want to shed a few pounds; however, you have to make sure not to go overboard with it. Here is my advice if you want to lose some weight.
Set Reasonable Goals
One thing that I realized recently on my own journey to weight-loss is that you have to set reasonable goals. Don’t think that you’re going to lose 5lbs a week because it probably won’t happen and, honestly, it’s not healthy. You should aim to lose 1-2 pounds a week and if you don’t make that goal, don’t beat yourself up over it. There will be days/weeks that you will go without losing weight, but your body is changing in other ways. You may be losing inches or increasing muscle for instance, so you shouldn’t expect to lose weight every day. Also, do NOT weigh yourself every day because it will probably bring down your self-esteem and motivation if you don’t lose weight that day; instead, weigh yourself once a week, once every two weeks if you can help it.
When trying to lose weight, you should increase the amount of exercise you’re doing. No, you do not have to join a gym; though, if you join a gym you will be able to have more options. There are a ton of websites out there with different exercises and also, you can look at Pintrest and YouTube as well for ideas. Another possibility is to do 30-Day Challenges, which is something that I recently started doing. Challenge yourself to perform an exercise or two daily, increasing as the days go on.
Decrease Unhealthy Eating Habits
Let’s face it, fast-food and eating out is not only easier than making food at home, but it can, at times, also be cheaper. You have to resist the urge to go out to eat all the time and instead make food at home. Also, you should cut back on how many sweets and much “junk” food you’re eating. I’m not saying to cut these items off the menu completely because, frankly, it’s okay to have something not-so-healthy every now and then. Try cutting back to having a meal out to once a week and minimizing your sweets and snacks.
Tell Yourself you’re Beautiful/Handsome
Yes, I know this is not actually a tip on how to lose weight, but it is a way to help increase your self-esteem. Many people who see themselves as overweight also have low self-esteem, so it is important to build that back up. When you see yourself as handsome or beautiful, so will those around you. Every day, look in the mirror and tell yourself that you’re drop-dead gorgeous, even if you don’t believe it at first, you’ll start to if you consistently tell yourself this. If it helps, leave a post-it note on your mirror to remind yourself or even write it on your mirror with an erasable marker or lipstick, whatever you have! Just make sure you tell yourself how good-looking you are, every day.
Weight Loss Surgery
If you have been following my blog, you may know that I had weight loss surgery in 2011, but this was not a quick decision. In my opinion, weight loss surgery should be your last resort because it is drastic measures. I would not have gotten weight loss surgery if I didn’t have any other choice and I honestly didn’t. Many think it’s the “easy” way out, but I promise you it is not. Even with weight loss surgery, a lot of your success hinges on your will power. Make sure that you try other avenues of losing weight before taking the plunge of having weight loss surgery.
At the end of the day, as I said previously, no matter what you look like you’re fine just the way you are. I know it’s hard to realize that because I’ve been there. There is nothing wrong with you, but if you want to lose a bit of weight, set yourself some reasonable goals, increase exercise while decreasing unhealthy eating habits, and work on building your self-esteem.
Until next time!
